Start Biking Now!

Here's what worked for me:

• start with cheap bike, a friend sold me her old one for cheap (cycle salvation may have some good ones for cheap!)
  • I didn't want to spend $1000 on a hobby that would go nowhere
  • I really liked having a "beater" bike, I felt comfortable parking it everywhere, sometimes not even locking it!
• find a safe route, bike paths are the best
• go at your own pace, make sure you have fun!
• stop before you want to, leave some energy in the tank
• foster curiosity, explore new areas
• reward yourself with treats 🥐☕️

Riding in the streets

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation has created a Cycling Skills PDF Guide, which is a great overview of what to do while riding outside. It's particularly recommended for people who don't drive cars, since it covers drivers expectations. MTO's Bicycle Safety Website is also a great read!

A few important things:

• You need lights (front + rear), and bell. Helmet is optional if older than 18.
• In Ontario, a bike is considered a vehicle (aka you can ride on most roads).
• You can't ride on sidewalks or crosswalks.
• Cars must keep a meter distance while passing.
